As a lover of Tenerife - and Los Cristianos in particular - I can honestly say I think these are some of the best pics I have ever seen!

I stayed in Peurto DLC some 44 years ago for my first ever time on Tenerife, hired a Fiat Panda with pedals thru' the floor and came down to the South on a couple of days and I recall scenes as depicted in a few of these photos. So, so many memories. Sat in a small bar in what was to become the church square and was offered a couple of hundred hectares of land for a pittance! Oh to have the benefit of hindsight! I think it may have been the following year that the very beautiful Elizabeth Taylor (before she used too much lipstick and did horrible things to her lovely hair) brought Richard Burton on holiday here. They bought some land (probably the same as I had been offered) near to where TRG is now!
Have to say the photos are brilliant.

Lovely pics. I have always wanted to have a conversation with one of t he elderly fishermen in the harbour area to ask what their views are on what tourism has done to their village. Ialways think they may just be tolerating us all wandering around but on the other hand ,it brings much needed employment to their families. It does not seem so long ago that the walk from Las Americas to Los Cristianosalong the coast line was just a dirt track and the first hotel we remembered being built there was the Med Palace. I could not even begin to count the number of times we stillwalk along that shoreline and come into LC still enthralledwith it as that first day. Something about Tenerife that gladdens your heart,I always feel as if I am coming home.Long may it continue.

Got some of those pics in the apartment, There used to be a photographer at the bottom of the stairs near the church in LC. Sadly he's gone now. But there is another one just up the fork road by the Revron who sells old picures.

I too remember the rough ground between the 2 resorts.
I have a photo too of my daughter when she was about 3, shes now 20 standing on the bit of ground where the safai centre now sits.
the old photos are great - ive always had a fascination with the old house on the beach at los cristianos so it was lovely to see that how it used to be. I have researched this but have nit managed to find any information about it. Does anyone know the background of the story? I would love to know

blondie

Is that the villa beyond the Arona Gran, I have always wondered about that house too. One person we did ask said it once belonged to Liz Taylor and Richard Burton but I have my doubts . I know they had been in LC as we have seen photos of them in a hotel somewhere. Perhaps the person in the house now does not want anyone knowing who they are , so we might never know

essexeddie

Margaretta
05-04-2014, 19:28
Liz Taylor and Richard Burton's picture was at the Hotel Oasis Moreque. Your question about their possible villa home has been asked here many times and I'd LOVE to know too! Some people say it was the big villa on the coasthill at Fanabe? Then there is the Omar Sharif theory but he is also reputed to have a villa in Lanzarote. All dream places and wishing we really knew. Perhaps some of Blondie's elderly fishermen would know? AND I want a multimillionaire to buy one for me....pleeeeese....

Reasonably certain it is owned by an old established Canarian family, that owned most of the land in that area, some was sold off about 14 years ago, and is now Parque Tropical and Playa Graciosa. But left the last parcel between Parque tropical 2 and 3 for several years and eventually sold it to El Rincon developers, much to the annoyance of Parque tropical Developers. At that time the occupant of the villa was an old lady called Cristiana, who had the reputation of being a tough business woman.

This was told to me by developers of Parque tropical just before they started to build.

essexeddie
06-04-2014, 15:36
I remember a few years back before Tropical and Rincon was built that the family in that property were builders of some sort as often there were large lorries parked behind the gates.
The place seems to have gone downhill as of late.

Maybe this could be the answer :flatcap:

27 November 1923: The squadron departed Devonport, bound for Sierra Leone. While enroute, Hood conducted multiple sea boat, collision quarters and action stations exercises. The crew conducted a thorough cleaning and painting of the ship. By 03 December, the Squadron was off Tenerife, Canary Islands. Aboard Hood, tropical rig was adopted on 07 December. Hood averaged a daily speed of 10 knots. Arrived at Freetown, Sierra Leone on 08 December.

What enjoyment you have given me with these photos, not only because I first came here to live over 26 yrs. ago but, my first wife and I had holidayed in Peurto in early April, 1977 so several photos recapture the quaintness of the Island. Looking at some of the very early ones show an almost third Wordly aspect to life here before major tourism got its teeth into the place most of us on here are fortunate enough to call home.

Hi Timmy, I am so pleased that you enjoyed the photos. I find it striking to see how basic things were here before Tourism took over. It must have been an exciting time for the locals seeing all that development going on but I do wonder how many of the original inhabitants benefitted from that boom. Most must have been fisherman or farmers but I suppose the luckiest ones owned a piece of land. I think the photos tell an amazing story.

Insofar as locals seeing some financial rewards then, yes, the landowners were made overnight millionairs particularly the people who owned the land where the Palm Beach Club and also Island Village now stand. Whilst Island Village was in its early stages the adjacent land was bought to build the Water Park on. However a number of locals also got jobs working at these resorts, housekeeping staff, maintainence guys and the like. Because these families were already resident locally they were first in line for these jobs. Not a great deal I would have to admit.

It would appear that the current address for the photos is now different to the original, perhaps due to archiving at Flicker. The original probably contained some metadata that allowed access to the archive but is not included in the copied URL.
